Job Description Summary: The Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education (GME) is responsible for oversight of all residency and fellowship programs for the KU School of Medicine-Wichita (KUSM-W) which are physically located in Wichita and Salina Kansas. The Associate Dean serves as the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) ensuring the sponsoring institution and its affiliated residency programs are in substantial compliance with all Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Institutional Requirements, Common Program Requirements, and Specialty-Specific Program Requirements.
The DIO is appointed by the Dean with concurrence and approval of the CEO of Wesley Medical Center and Via Christi Hospitals-Wichita, or their respective designees, and the Board of Directors of the Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education (WCGME) to be the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education.
The Associate Dean will have broad knowledge and experience in medical education and should possess the competencies for Institutional GME Leaders.
Job Description: Job Duties: GME/WCGME Leadership - 75% Serve as the leader for GME in Wichita and Salina, assisting program directors to produce high quality residency programs with a commitment to the development and implementation of educational best practices
Ensure that policies and procedures related to GME are in compliance with ACGME requirements
Provide leadership, guidance and direction to the KUSM-W Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) by serving as Chair and Voting Member
Present an annual report and other reports upon request to the Dean of the medical school, the WCGME Board of Directors, the Kansas Board of Regents and organized medical staffs (OMS) of the major participating hospitals
Provide general oversight and operational leadership to the staff of the WCGME office
Provide guidance and consultation to the Chief Operating Officer of WCGME on resident employment matters including contracts, compensation and benefits, and other related issues.
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with hospital partners, the AD/DIO of KUSM-Kansas City, outside agencies relevant to GME (e.g. Kansas Board of Healing Arts, ACGME, Council of Teaching Hospitals, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services), and federal, state and local legislators and other elected officials under direction of the Dean of the medical school,
Department Faculty - 25% This position will include a departmental faculty appointment which might include clinical, teaching, research, etc.
Required Qualifications: Education:
- MD/DO or PhD or ED in related field
- If MD/DO, State of Kansas medical license or eligible for licensure and ability to qualify as member of hospital medical staff and/or University practice plan.
Experience:
- Evidence of successful leadership experience in GME.
- Experience as faculty member at an accredited medical school in the United States.
- Knowledge of ACGME policies for accreditation, including but not limited to, understanding of Sponsoring Institution requirements, Residency/Fellowship specific requirements and the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) program.
- Clear understanding of the complexities of GME financing, particularly with respect to the legislative and regulatory environment, as well as the ability to assist the institution and its partner hospitals in determining strategic direction for future funding.
- Experience teaching medical students and residents.
Skills:
- Strong innovative approaches to education and adult learning.
- Ability to creatively see opportunities and synergies for program establishment or improvement.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to inspire, mentor, and lead a team.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience:
- Experience as a residency program director.
- Experience with community-based medical education.
- Experience working with hospital partners to enhance the clinical learning environment.
- Experience with legislative/government process.
